Goal

Second step of #120 (socket options for std/network, FIRST-PARTY.md gap 22): a program can switch TCP_NODELAY and
turn TCP keepalive on, with its timings, on a connected TcpStream, and read both back. The runtime side landed in
step 1 (#426, the natives networkSetOption and networkOption, option numbers in docs/design/NETWORK.md section 4
and runtime/include/torb_network.h).

Design

Decided in #120 (comment decided by the loop); std/network, on TcpStream only, methods and no settings object:

  • fn setNoDelay(enabled: Bool): Result<Void, NetworkError> and fn noDelay(): Result<Bool, NetworkError>
    (option 0).
  • fn setKeepAlive(idle: Duration?, interval: Duration? = None, count: Int? = None): Result<Void, NetworkError>:
None for idle turns keepalive off (option 1 = 0), Some(idle) turns it on (option 1 = 1) and sets the idle time
(option 2); interval (option 3) and count (option 4) are set where given. Durations are whole seconds, at least
1: a smaller non-zero Duration is rounded up to 1 s, a zero Duration or a count below 1 is refused with a
NetworkError before any native is called.
  • fn keepAlive(): Result<Duration?, NetworkError>: None while keepalive is off, else the idle time.
  • Defaults stay: TCP_NODELAY on, keepalive off. A closed stream answers a NetworkError that isClosed().
  • Two private native fn declarations in std/network/src/tcp.trb next to networkShutdown, matching the manifest
entries of step 1: networkSetOption(stream: Int, option: Int, value: Int): Int and
networkOption(stream: Int, option: Int): Int; failures go through the existing NetworkError mapping.
  • No sandbox change: options of an already open socket are not a new capability (NETWORK.md section 10).
  • Not in this step: UDP options, listener options, SO_LINGER, Unix domain sockets (#119).

Acceptance criteria

  • The two setters and two readers exist on TcpStream in std/network/src/tcp.trb with doc comments, as above.
  • Tests in std/network/tests against a loopback connection: noDelay() is true by default, setNoDelay(false)
reads back false and true again; keepAlive() is None by default, setKeepAlive(idle: Some(60.seconds()))
    reads back 60 s, setKeepAlive(None) turns it off; a sub-second idle is rounded up to 1 s; a zero idle and a
count of 0 are refused; after close() every call fails with isClosed(). No assertion depends on a probe
really being sent. Run natively and in the VM (the existing std/network test setup).
  • docs/standard-library/network.md documents the four methods; docs/design/NETWORK.md section 4 says the setter
is done (replacing the "built in two steps" wording, keeping the option table); FIRST-PARTY.md gap 22 marked
done with the date and a pointer to std/network/src/tcp.trb and the tests; the generated skills/ are
    regenerated (docs change).
  • Tier A green in forge CI (sh tools/gates.sh a); b if CLAUDE.md asks for it for the touched paths.

Seed

Touches the seed: no further seed change. This is the second commit of the two-commit rule of CLAUDE.md
("Seed and breaking changes"): the natives were taught in step 1, and the published seed c4a8443532aa (release
seeds, 2026-10-24) already contains them, so std/network can use them and the compiler (which imports std/network
in compiler/src/debugger/adapter.trb) still bootstraps in CI. No new native, no syntax change, no new driver flag, no
std name looked up by string by the compiler. A seed refresh after this is not needed for it and stays Torben's and the
merge gate's anyway.

Size

One PR, one commit: feat(network): TcpStream.setNoDelay and setKeepAlive (at most 100 characters). About 1 to 2 h:
~60 lines of std/, one test file, three doc edits.

Dependencies

Step 1 (#426) landed (PR #427). Independent of #119 (Unix domain sockets); both touch std/network/src/tcp.trb, so
whichever lands second rebases.

## Goal Second step of #120 (socket options for `std/network`, FIRST-PARTY.md gap 22): a program can switch `TCP_NODELAY` and turn TCP keepalive on, with its timings, on a connected `TcpStream`, and read both back. Durations are whole seconds, at least 1: a smaller non-zero `Duration` is rounded up to 1 s, a zero `Duration` or a `count` below 1 is refused with a `NetworkError` before any native is called. - `fn keepAlive(): Result<Duration?, NetworkError>`: `None` while keepalive is off, else the idle time. - Defaults stay: `TCP_NODELAY` on, keepalive off.
