Slice of the epic #582. Starts after #585 (the concept, the vertical slice and the book gates) is merged.

Scope

Write the remaining chapters of book/guide/, each about one kind of task, read in any order:

New page Replaces in docs/
guide/first-project.md guide/installing-and-running.md, guide/a-small-program.md, how-to/set-up-a-workspace.md, how-to/add-a-dependency.md
guide/modelling-data.md language/types/data-or-capsule.md, how-to/write-a-builder.md, how-to/use-a-type-as-a-map-key.md, how-to/convert-between-types.md
guide/working-with-collections.md how-to/collect-a-pipeline.md, how-to/sort-by-more-than-one-key.md, the rest of guide/collections-and-pipelines.md
guide/files-and-formats.md how-to/read-a-file.md, how-to/read-and-write-json.md
guide/testing.md how-to/write-a-test.md
guide/native-programs.md how-to/build-a-native-binary.md, language/extensibility/foreign-functions.md
guide/design-choices.md guide/idiomatic-torbscript.md, explanation/why-*.md, explanation/where-are-my-overloads.md

Acceptance criteria

  • Every page has the kind page and is written as book/CONCEPT.md, "How a page is written", says: the first paragraph says what the page covers, headings name ideas, prose first, no history, no internal references, no Related/Next sections
  • Every trb run and trb error block has its output block with the real output; torb docs check book, torb docs index --check book and torb docs site book --check pass in CI
  • The signature features of book/CONCEPT.md that the area touches are shown, not just named
  • The old pages of docs/ this slice replaces are deleted in the same PR, unless a skill is still built from them (then they stay, unpublished, and the PR says which)
  • guide/design-choices.md has one short section per choice, each with the reason in a sentence and an example, no comparison tables of other languages
  • A chapter grows one example across its sections where the task allows it (CONCEPT.md, "Examples grow")

Chapters

Filed one at a time, each as its own issue when the one before it has landed (just in time).

  • guide/first-project.md - #607 (merged)
  • guide/modelling-data.md - #636 (ready)
  • guide/working-with-collections.md
  • guide/files-and-formats.md
  • guide/testing.md
  • guide/native-programs.md
  • guide/design-choices.md

[loop:torbscript] intake: in scope (slice of epic #582, its blocker #585 is merged), no duplicate, no owner question, no design-record collision. Seven chapters are more than one PR that lands as one or two commits, so the refine worker splits it just in time and files the first chapter as its own ready issue.
[loop:torbscript] claim refine by session:loop-torbscript-20261029-0858 until 2026-10-29T23:40:00Z

[loop:torbscript] refine: filed #636 (guide/modelling-data.md, ready) as the next chapter after #607 (merged); checklist updated. Remaining chapters are filed just in time when a slot and the ready buffer allow.
